[Morgan] If you can't say something nice, be careful

When the question is “How do you greet people,” it can be really hard to answer. Depending on who you are greeting, there are different answers. It usually depends on how well you know the person you are greeting.

When I am familiar with someone, I usually say, “Hey, what’s up?” but when it’s someone I don’t know, the greeting would be “Hi, how are you doing?” There are many different greetings people throughout the world use, but these seem to be the most common ones.

As many nice greetings as there are, there can be some that are offensive to people. I believe that a greeting which doesn’t personally address a person can be considered rude. Often times, people use offensive terms to address a person or people, trying to make it seem like a positive greeting, however, they aren’t positive at all. They are more rude than anything. I try not to socialize with the people who use these rude greetings, because who really wants to be around people who demean your self-esteem by greeting you rudely? I don’t.

Not only are there greetings that can be mean, but there are also gestures. People need to be very careful when using hand gestures. They can be harder to see, and because of that, people can misinterpret what you are trying to say. Sometimes, hand gestures can also be considered gang-related.

I know of many people who use hand gestures in a fun way, and find out later that they are a gang. Another gesture that people use which can be considered offensive is winking. People think it’s okay to wink at someone, but the meaning is not always taken as it is meant to be. A wink can be a “Do you get my point?” but it can also be translated into something entirely different. There are many greetings and gestures that can mean multiple things, and maybe they aren’t meant to be understood in a negative way, but they are often perceived that way. I believe people in this society need to be very careful about who they do and say these things to.
